    What is HypnoBirthing?

"The overall effect of practicing HypnoBirthing® techniques is that birthing parents are better able to appreciate the benefits of calm, gentle birthing, making the experience a joyful one for mother, baby, and birth companion—benefits that can last a life time."
    The HypnoBirthing Institute

"HypnoBirthing® techniques teach woman how to release all prior programming about birth to free herself of limiting thoughts and emotions that lead to pain-causing fear and resistant muscles. When giving birth with HypnoBirthing®, a mother is not in a trance or asleep but instead in a state of deep relaxation—awake, aware, and fully in control."
    The HypnoBirthing Institute

HypnoBirthing uses self-hypnosis to create a positive, comfortable birth experience. It is also a lifestyle of being mindful about everything you put into your body, realizing how your baby is an important participant in the whole process, and connecting and bonding with your baby in the womb. In class, you will learn many skills and techniques that will get you instantly relaxed and deeply into your birthing body, bringing you calm, peace, and into an altered state of mind.

The key to success with HypnoBirthing is PRACTICE! As you practice at least one technique each day and listen to the birth affirmation track and or the "Rainbow Relaxation" track, you will condition your mind to be able to access that ultimate deeply-relaxed state in an instant during your birthing time. You will learn to assist your body as the waves of surges wash over you, versus resisting the sensations. One of the many things I love about HypnoBirthing is that it gives you the skills to get relaxed and stay relaxed or get back to relaxed throughout your birthing process.

Is HypnoBirthing only for moms wanting an unmedicated birth?
HypnoBirthing can aide in creating a wonderful, positive, calm birthing experience even without medication. But hypnosis can certainly be used leading up to and sometimes even with some medications. In fact, HypnoBirthing can help mom be a more active participant with an epidural or IV narcotics. Or she might find she does not choose to use medications with hypnosis. There is no right or wrong way to get through your birthing process.

What is the partner’s role in HypnoBirthing?
The partner, or birth companion as we call the mother's main support person in HypnoBirthing, has a very important role in pregnancy, birth, and postpartum. In pregnancy, it is important the birth companion understands what mom is doing to prepare for her birth experience. The birth companion can practice with mom, read the book, attend classes, and talk with mom about her hopes and dreams for birth. Much of the bonding between parents and baby takes place prenatally.

During labor, the birth companion has many important jobs, starting with creating the atmosphere that mother wants with lights, music, etc., and protecting mother's space through advocating for her wishes. Most importantly, they are hands-on support for the mother, constantly assessing her and doing what they can to keep her calm and positive. Creating that space allows her to be vulnerable and go deeply into her hypnotic state while feeling safe and secure. The birth companion will learn how to help mom with positions, environment, and even participate in getting her deeper and deeper into her hypnotic state. If she goes off track, the birth companion can help her get back to where she wants to be.

Once the baby is born, it is a precious time for family bonding. The birth companion’s presence is deeply important here by helping to keep the space sacred and calm and to decrease overstimulation of the baby. Skin-to-skin is another amazing way for partner and baby to bond. Do it as much as you want anytime, especially in the early days with baby but continuing throughout the first year of baby’s life.

    Is HypnoBirthing only for homebirths?
Absolutely not! You can use hypnosis for childbirth at home, a birth center, or a hospital. Communication with your delivering health care provider and the hospital / birthing center or home birth staff is essential. HypnoBirthing is a method of preparing your body, mind, and spirit for any kind of birth and is suitable for use in any birth place.
